EMERSON CHARITABLE TRUST MAKES $5,000 GRANT TO NORTH ST. LOUIS AGENCY ST. LOUIS, January 30, 2007 - The Emerson Charitable Trust has awarded The Youth & Family Center a grant of $5,000 in support of its Access For All Technology Initiative, which connects families living in low-income communities with technology and the Internet. The goal of the Access For All Technology Initiative is to increase the rate of computer knowledge and ownership among children and families living in low-income households. Furthermore, the Initiative equips children and parents of low-income families with the skills necessary to leverage technology to improve their lives. “A tremendous need for technology access exists in this community. We’re helping children complete homework assignments, parents apply for jobs and older citizens research health related matters or stay in touch with distant relatives through email. Without the program, these people would continue to fall behind the pace of society,” said Herman Noah, Youth & Family Center Executive Director. “Think about it. How are most people communicating today? By email and on the Internet. Children today must complete college applications on line. More and more of us are filing our taxes on the computer. Where does that leave those without access?” Noah asked. Throughout its 5 year history, the Initiative has placed an average of 100 computers in low-income households annually. Its Community Computer & Internet lab is free of charge and open to residents from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily and by request on weekends. The Youth & Family Center has operated on St. Louis’ Near North Side since 1888. Its programs are directed at young people ages 5 to 17 and include after school programs, computer and technology programs, athletics, tutoring and educational programs and life skills development activities. ###
