RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES MAKES $5,000 GRANT TO INCREASE ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY IN NORTH CITY NEIGHBORHOODS

(ST. LOUIS) Apr. 12, 2006

Ronald McDonald House Charities has made a grant of $5,000 to The Youth & Family Center. The grant will fund computer and technology upgrades for The Youth & Family Center’s Community Computer and Internet Lab, a component of its Access For All Technology Initiative.

The Access For All Technology Initiative increases the rate of computer knowledge, access and ownership among children living in low-income households and equips them with the skills to leverage technology to improve the quality of their lives.

The Initiative supports children in 3 core areas:

1. Provides lab access to computers and Hi-Speed Internet to those unable to afford it.  The lab is open to the public 5 days a week, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

2. Educates children living in low-income households to proficiency in computer applications, especially those that will advance them academically, such as Microsoft
Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Children follow a specific curriculum for each software application.

3. Places computers and Hi-Speed Internet in the homes of participants. Each year, over 100 computers are placed in low-income households.

The Youth & Family Center has operated on St. Louis’ Near North Side for over a century. Its programs are directed at young people ages 5-17 and include After School programs, Computer & Technology programs, Athletics, Tutoring & Educational programs and Life Skills Development programs.
